Sacred Expression Art
Welcome! My name is Michele Hamida Rabinowitz and I’m a self-taught artist. My joy is to create expressive art with mixed media and textiles from the deep love and connection I feel in the natural world and the beauty I see in all of creation.
My passion started eight years ago when visiting my daughter in Rockland, Maine, when she asked me to co-create a painting with her for my granddaughter. I had no idea what I was doing and resisted the process, but as I put paint on the canvas, what I started to experience when I said “yes” actually changed my life. The inspiration, joy and freedom I was feeling was being transmitted onto the canvas filling my heart with a passion that still flows through me today.
My art has been described as an expression of joy, femininity, beauty and spirituality. With each piece I create, my love of color, depth, heart and movement comes through. My goal as an artist is to share the joy of creativity that lifts the spirit and opens the hearts for others.
My work has been shown at ArtServe, a historic art center in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in 2019. In the summer of 2022, I was offered an opportunity to exhibit my paintings at Cia Cafe in South Portland, Maine. As a new resident to Maine, it is exciting to meet new artists while seeking opportunities to bring my art out to the community. Most recently, I was asked by “The Scone Goddess” in Northport, Maine, to sell my greeting cards and small prints. Currently, I am doing Art Shows in Maine, which is a way to not only connect to the community, but to share the gift of creativity with others.
I have explored many mediums and art forms with many creatives of whom I aspire to. As my creativity expands in other ways, I continue to learn who I am as a creative while understanding the gifts I’ve been given. Recently, while exploring different mediums, I began to connect to textile and fiber art. This was something that called to me many years ago, but as many things in life, sometimes those sparks of inspiration fade away. But in life everything is full circle, so here it is again, but now with a curiosity and a passion that is touching something very ancient and deep in my soul.
Creative expression for me is a flow, a way of being and a way I live my life. As I walk in nature, I witness the beauty that surrounds me. These days I look to bring this beauty into my artwork through textiles. In addition to the rocks, stones and sticks and so much more I pick up, I also use food scraps to eco-dye my fabrics. This process has stirred something in me that calls to a familiar place in my lineage. This ancient method has deepened my love of color and texture through creativity.
My mother being a knitter and my father a photographer, I grew up with parents who were creative. My grandparents worked in the sweatshops and factories as tailors in the 20’s and 30’s. As I stitch and mend, I feel a deep connection to my roots that are part of who I am. As a child, my father taught me how to hand sew, which came quite naturally for me. I always find it interesting when these tiny memories come back to life and continue to teach us the deeper connection of who we are.
My intuitive nature is what feeds my inspiration. In every project I create, it comes from a place of wanting to explore and to express my emotions through art. Creativity is a birthright of every human being. It is part of who we are. When we feed that energy, when we shine that light, it brings us back to a time of imagination which is our child-like nature, our true essence.
